<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-12666" style="padding: 8px; border: 2px solid #ffffff;" title="C3 Panel Session" alt="Making the Connection to ROI panel session at C3" src="http://calliduscloud.com/files/Monday-keynote-panel-300x200.jpg" width="300" height="200" />I’ve just returned from the <a title="CallidusCloud Connections 2013 website" href="http://www.calliduscloudconnections.com/" target="_blank">C3 conference</a>, which saw an enormous increase in social media commentary, wisdom and connectivity compared to the 2012 event.  Everything was about the growing footprint of Sales Performance Management platforms and practices, particularly the great customer panel in which three practitioners cited below help me present a flesh-and-blood complement to Aberdeen’s deliberately more anonymous aggregated end-user Sales Effectiveness research.  Among the many re-tweets, the following concepts stand out:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>10% of US buyers take a second meeting with their seller. So where are the 90% of dollars going?</strong>   This speaks to sales funnel management, and the linear, uni-directional flow of leads and opportunities that under-performing companies mistakenly manage.  Best-in-Class firms are better at sending unfilled leads and unresolved pursuits back to marketing, for re-engagement and nurturing. When marketing and sales are aligned to the point that opportunities can be moved fluidly up and down the customer engagement funnel, everyone wins.</li>
<li><strong>Sales is the communications channel of choice for the most complex conversations, when other channels are insufficient</strong>.  Sales is the most expensive channel you can throw at your prospective customer, so use it wisely.  But be sure to value the power of this personal interaction early enough in the marketing/sales-aligned outreach, to build emotional connections.  And don’t assume that once sales is engaged, that marketing’s job is done: for long sales cycles, the prospect needs ongoing reminders of the value you hope to deliver, from sources other than their sales rep.  This includes social, of course: facts tell, but stories sell, and if you have passionate customers, they represent the potentially most lucrative communications channel in your toolkit.</li>
<li><strong>19% of buyers enjoy their interactions with Sales: food for thought</strong>.  Buyers want to be educated, not molested.  Take a hint from all this social media activity with which you are engaged at this moment: if you teach someone something, they appreciate how you improve their life in some small way, and may seek to buy from you.  And buying is always better than being sold.</li>
<li><strong>“Our competitors use our own sales comp issues to recruit our people away.” – quote from a sales comp survey.</strong> My recent research report “Motivate, Incent, Compensate, Enable: Sales Performance Management Best Practices“  shows that it costs over $36k to replace a typical B2B sales rep, as well as 7.3 months to hire and onboard them.  With even the Best-in-Class companies reporting a 22.4% sales turnover rate, it’s crucial to minimize the hard and soft costs of losing reps to involuntary turnover.  This means clarity and transparency in compensation plans, payments and dispute resolution need to be top priorities.</li>
<li><strong>“The ‘marketing shoving stuff at sales’ era is over.”</strong>  In the old days we lugged brochures to shows and tossed them out at the end of the event, hoping that marketing would develop a better message in the next revision cycle faster.  Today’s Best-in-Class enterprises use deal rooms and sales content management solutions that empower sellers with choice – assets and messaging they can easily tailor for individual accounts and deal pursuits – as well as a feedback loop to help marketing continuously hone their output to support what matters most…the customer.  Thanks to Diana Weigand, Global Sales Enablement Director at Motorola Solutions, for her insight here.</li>
<li><strong>“Find yourself in the balance sheet.” You’ll know how successful you are.</strong>  Panelist Anubhav Saxena, HCL’s SVP/Global Head of Marketing, provides this simple but spot-on validation that everyone in the enterprise should consider themselves culpable for driving revenue.  If you’re in sales, it’s obvious; if you touch the customer in any way, it makes sense.  But even back-office folks have responsibility to help maximize the health of the entire organization – it certainly will come back to reward them in due time.</li>
<li><strong>28,000 hours saved per year? Well worth a trip to Vegas.</strong> Brian Greenberg, Director of Compensation for Verizon, implemented a remarkable sales commission transformation, turning from an IT-heavy homegrown system supporting over 6000 payees, to a commercial offering that easily handles the 2 billion daily pieces of order entry, quota, territory and CRM data required to get sales staff and partners paid accurately and fairly.  That’s billion, with a B. The 28k in hours – not to mention the documented $17M in ROI – stem from a dramatic reduction in errors, disputes and overall friction that keeps sellers from selling, and companies from succeeding.</li>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Integrating marketing automation, performance improvement, sales performance management and sales effectiveness might seem like complicated machinery. But CallidusCloud President and CEO Leslie Stretch told a packed house during the C3 opening keynote address that it’s not complicated. It’s just Lead to Money.</p>
<p>“It’s not complicated,” he told them. While sales managers are struggling with sales forecasts, sales people want to have better outcomes. “This,” he continued, “is about getting you those outcomes.”</p>
<p>The excitement was palpable as executives showed game-changing sales performance product releases and customers revealed business-boosting results.</p>
<h2><b>Game Changer</b></h2>
<p>In his <a href="http://www.calliduscloudconnections.com/livestream.html" target="_blank">opening keynote</a> in front of more than 700 (plus 1,200 watching the <a href="http://www.calliduscloudconnections.com/livestream.html" target="_blank">live stream video</a>), enlisted the aid of Dan Koellhofer, Vice President of Product Management, to show startling integration and ease of use among CallidusCloud products. In a live demo on an iPad, Koellhofer showed the integration between CallidusCloud products for hiring, training, coaching and compensating. He also demonstrated how a sales rep could manage territories and quotas in a few keystrokes with precision and granular control. Lead to Money did not look complicated at all.</p>
<p>Upcoming releases will include pre-packaged integration with Salesforce , Workday, SAP, Dynamics CRM, and Oracle.</p>
<h2><b>Proof Points</b></h2>
<p>CallidusCloud’s new user interface provides iPad-easy functionality for the entire lead to money process, separating itself from the competition even more. In the sessions that followed, more details emerged about functionality for territories and quotas. <h2><b>What Is Lead to Money?</b></h2>
<p>Lead to money, he said, can be simplified to Marketing Automation &#8211; Sales Enablement – Sales Quotes and Configuration – Compensation – Money</p>
<p>“It’s about getting people to the sale faster,” he said.</p>
<h2><b>A Sales Performance Management Refresher</b></h2>
<p>Peter Ostrow, Vice President and Group Director of Customer Management and Principal Analyst of Sales Effectiveness for Aberdeen Group, joined Stretch on stage to deliver some fresh statistics to underscore the importance of Sales Performance Management and Sales Enablement.</p>
<p>Ostrow said that according to Aberdeen’s research, best-in-class sales organizations:</p>
<ul>
<li>Attain 105% of quota</li>
<li>Have well over 80% of reps meeting or exceeding quota</li>
<li>Achieve 14.9% revenue growth</li>
<li>Cross-train their sales teams with marketing 44% of the time</li>
<li>Have a centralized repository of assets and sales tools for sales and marketing (92%)</li>
<li>Figure out the buyer’s journey in order to cement the selling process</li>
</ul>

<p>Saxena explained that HCL used LeadFormix to improve its marketing automation to increase growth seven times and achieve highest-ever customer acquisition even during the worst global recession since the 1930s.</p>
<p>Weigand said Motorola committed to aligning the sales process with the customer buying process to turn the company around.</p>
<p>Greenberg said Verizon saved 28,000 hours of productivity per year by improving its sales process. Verizon also experienced 26% cost reduction and $8 million in additional profit utilizing CallidusCloud Commissions.</p>
<p>Ostrow said these process improvements underscore the importance of putting the sales rep at the center attention. &#8220;Everything we do has to be about the customer, even if we&#8217;re not touching the customer in our role.&#8221;</p>
<h2><b>Information Sharing Improves Productivity</b></h2>
<p>Sales people don’t share information, the panelists agreed. So how do you make them share information? He asked Weigand. That, she said is a good question. For Motorola, the answer is gamification. Weigand said Motorola got “unbelievable engagement” from gamification, which it plans to increase going forward.</p>
<p>Saxena closed by saying companies are what their bottom line says. “Find yourself in the balance sheet,” he advised.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>PLEASANTON, CALIF., May 2, 2013 –</strong> Callidus Software Inc. (NASDAQ: <a title="Investor Relations" href="http://www.calliduscloud.com/about-us/investor-relations/">CALD</a>), a leading provider of hiring, learning, marketing and selling cloud software, today announced the appointment of Bob L. Corey to serve as Senior Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, effective as of May 31, 2013.  Mr. Corey will report to Leslie Stretch, the company’s President and Chief Executive Officer.</p>
<p>“Bob brings more than 30 years of executive and financial management experience in public and private companies, particularly in Silicon Valley with software and hardware companies earning more than $100 million in revenue annually.  Bob is highly experienced in all aspects of managing the financials of public companies, he has a strong history with the street, and a proven track record in developing and delivering communications regarding the companies he represents.  He also has strong corporate governance acumen and extensive mergers and acquisitions experience.  His operational skills are precisely what we need at this time in the Company’s development. I am thrilled to have him join our team,” said Mr. Stretch.</p>
<p>Prior to joining the Company, Mr. Corey served as the chief financial officer of FrontRange Solutions USA Inc., an enterprise software company, since May 2012.  Prior to FrontRange, he served in various roles at Extreme Networks, Inc., an Ethernet solutions company from July 2009 to March 2011, ultimately as interim chief executive officer and executive vice president and chief financial officer.  Prior to Extreme Networks, Mr. Corey held a variety of executive positions, including executive vice president and chief financial officer, at Thor Technologies, Inc., an enterprise software company, from May 2003 to January 2006.  Mr. Corey currently serves as a member of the board of directors and as chairman of the audit committee for Apigee Corporation, a private software development tools and services company.</p>
<p>Mr. Corey is replacing Ronald J. Fior, who has served as the Company’s Senior Vice President, Finance &amp; Operations and Chief Financial Officer for the past ten years.  Mr. Fior will remain in his present role through the filing of the Company’s Form 10-Q for the first quarter of 2013, and will continue with the Company through July 31, 2013 to help ensure a smooth transition.</p>
